29/12/1998IN FOCUS IV: Gandhi in Chiapas
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Mohandas Gandhi, SIPAZ undertook a project to spotlight the depth and the impact of Gandhian philosophy in the context of the ongoing conflict in Chiapas. The intention is to open the imagination to new forms of struggle in the tradition of active nonviolence.
On October 17, the first public conference on “Gandhi: Obedience and Disobedience in Social Life” featured Pietro Ameglio, Carlos Fazio, and Sonia Toledo. Over 200 persons in attendance demonstrated the strong interest in the topic. A museum exposition on the life and thought of Gandhi remained open until the end of October. It was accompanied by additional conferences and a variety of other academic and cultural activities.
