06/02/2012The state of Guerrero has a total population of 3,388,768 (3% of the Mexican population). 456, 774 persons older than 5 years speak an indigenous language, representing less than 15% of the population in the state (INEGI 2010). The indigenous population in Guerrero is found principally in the Montaña region and, to a lesser degree, in the Costa Chica region, both of which are the most marginalized areas in the state.
The indigenous population is comprised of 4 different groups:
- 170.622 Nahualts (nauas) make up 37% of the indigenous population
- 139.387 Mixtecos (na savi), 30.5%
- 119.291 Tlapanecos (me ‘phaa), 26%
- 45.799 Amuzgos (suljaa’), 10%
